Where?

Where in the world is Chiang Mai?

It is easily found on the globe. But for the New Jersey team, it will be many airtime hours to travel more than 10,000 miles from Paterson, NJ to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Once there, the five-member team will be building one of the 82 homes scheduled to be constructed during a week-long Habitat Build. This is one of several sites selected for the 2009 Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project (JRCWP).

Locating the site on a globe, left to right: Nancy DeVries, Craig Hoogstra,
Peter McBride, Bill Neumann and Pam McBride.

  1. On behalf of the board, staff, homeowners and volunteers of Paterson Habitat for Humanity, we wish you well as you begin this exciting adventure, and we’re looking forward to learning more about Habitat’s work in Asia.

As background, our JRCWP Thailand team will be working on a house sponsored by Paterson Habitat as part of our “tithe” obligation to the international work of Habitat. Each affiliate tithes (or donates 10%) on general contributions and we are excited that Paterson Habitat’s own volunteer team will be in Thailand to do the actual building.

For anyone wishing to learn more about the Jimmy & Roselyn CARTER WORK PROJECT – 2009 Mekong Delta Build, go to www.habitat.org/jcwp/2009/. Volunteers are still needed for this build so spread the word.

  2. Hello Barbara, Team Thailand, and all supporters of Habitat Paterson!

People in the Habitat International headquarters have heard about this great blog! So, we thought we would “drop in” to let you know how excited all of us are about your support of the MEKONG Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project!! The staff in Asia is hard at work preparing the build site for your arrival, and the families are so excited knowing that soon their lives will greatly improve through obtaining a safe and stable place to call home!! We know you will enjoy working side by side with people from ALL OVER the world towards one common goal!

US affiliates are asked to “tithe” from locally raised monies to send support to areas of the world where funds are very difficult to raise. Patterson is an outstanding LEADER in this effort and a great example of how you can fight poverty housing locally AND globally and engage volunteers in both efforts! APPLAUSE! APPLUAUSE!

Before you leave for this incredible journey, please let us know if there is anything our office can do to help you. When you get to the build site, know that one day during the week a short, loud, southern woman will suddenly pop up during the week to meet each of you, shake your hand, and say THANK YOU in person! We have some special things we have planned JUST for the US Affiliate teams that will be participating, and we have more US affiliates participating this year than ever before! 22 states will be represented this year at this project. This is a total of 47 affiliates from these states sending support! In addition to the US Habitat affiliates, 7 other countries that have active Habitat programs are sending teams, and you will be joining Germany, Romania, and New Zealand just to name a few.

Again, we thank you and wish you safe travels on your 10,000 mile journey to Asia! Happy building, and I’ll see you soon!

    In Partnership,

    Christine Odom
